Lowestoft Sixth Form College staged its annual two-night Performance Showcase this week, in which local students treated the public to an extravaganza of dance, drama, music and musical theatre. The college’s own incredibly talented Performing Arts students were joined on stage by equally impressive pupils from Beccles Free School, Ormiston Denes Academy and Clockwork Dance Company. Councillor Peter Knight, The Deputy Mayor of Lowestoft, was so impressed he vowed to come back for the second performance on Thursday 22nd March after enjoying the show on the Wednesday.
Highlights of the event included an excerpt from ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ by Andrew Lloyd Webber where students performed beautifully colourful renditions of ‘Masquerade’ and ‘Think of me’ as a part of the College’s extra-curricular performance workshop programme. Working with the music teacher, Guy Nottage, the students from L6FC recreated the harmonies and characteristics from this iconic musical to near perfection and with excellent audience reviews. Beccles Free Schools students added some excellent quality dance performances to the mix with solos from Maisie Pollard and Holly Wilson which were beautifully choreographed and professionally performed and Ormiston Denes academy showed just how talented their students are with beautiful solos from Laura Bettinson, Maiya Swan and Sophie Burch. The performances from Clockwork Dance Company showed a collective effort from all involved. This community run dance group meets at the Seagull Theatre on Saturday mornings and welcomes students of all abilities to train in contemporary dance.
Katy Beales, the event co-ordinator said “My personal highlights were the young performers from the ‘B&B young people’s theatre company’. Deaglan Devine, Josh Parks, Amy Mullen-Brown and Jamie Coleman gave a sneak peak of their up-coming show ‘Singin’ in the rain’ that will be performed at the Players Theatre early next month. Their energy on stage captivated the audience and showed what a fun filled performance it will be”
Two shining starts of the event were Chloe Jane Smith and Benjamin Head, both currently studying Performing Arts and Music at L6FC. These students performed monologues, solo songs and dances and were part of the bigger musical theatre numbers showcasing beautifully the versatility and talent of the students at Lowestoft Sixth Form College.
